Overview — Ledger Live App and Desktop Setup
The Ledger Live App is Ledger's official desktop application for managing cryptocurrencies, firmware updates, and installing apps on your Ledger hardware device. This guide covers the Ledger Live App download, desktop installation, first run, security best practices, and troubleshooting tips so you can start using Ledger Live App with confidence.
1. Download the Ledger Live App (Desktop)
Always download the Ledger Live App from Ledger's official website. Avoid third-party download sources.
- Open your browser and go to the official Ledger website:
https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live
. - Choose the Desktop download for your OS: Windows (64-bit), macOS, or Linux.
- Download the installer file (e.g.,
ledger-live-desktop-setup.exe
for Windows). - Verify the file when possible (check checksum or digital signature instructions on the Ledger site).
Tip: Using the official Ledger website reduces phishing risk. If an email links you to a download, confirm the URL manually by typing ledger.com into your browser.
2. Install the Ledger Live App on Desktop
Run the downloaded installer to install the Ledger Live App. On macOS you may need to allow the app from Security & Privacy settings. On Windows you may be prompted by SmartScreen — allow the app only if the installer came from the official Ledger domain.
Windows
- Double-click the
.exe
installer and follow on-screen prompts. - Allow the app to install required drivers if prompted.
macOS
- Open the
.dmg
, drag Ledger Live App to Applications, then eject the installer. - If macOS blocks the app, open System Preferences → Security & Privacy and click “Open Anyway.”
Linux
- Follow the Ledger-provided instructions for your distribution (AppImage or package).
3. First Run — Configure Ledger Live App
When you open the Ledger Live App for the first time, you'll be guided through an onboarding flow:
- Create or restore a wallet — choose “Set up as new device” if you have a new Ledger, or “Restore device” if you already have a recovery phrase.
- Follow on-screen instructions to install firmware updates if prompted. Firmware updates are signed by Ledger and are important for security and new features.
- Set (or confirm) your device PIN on the Ledger hardware — PIN entry always happens on the device screen.
- Optionally enable the passphrase feature for hidden wallets (advanced users only).
- Install the apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) through Ledger Live App’s Manager tab.
Remember: Your 24-word recovery phrase is the only backup of your keys. Keep it offline and private — Ledger will never ask you to enter it into the Ledger Live App or any website.
4. Connect Ledger Device to Ledger Live App
Use a genuine USB cable and plug your Ledger device into your computer. Unlock the device with your PIN. Ledger Live App will detect the device and prompt you to allow the connection. Always confirm prompts on your device screen.
- Open Ledger Live App → Connect device.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and confirm any actions on your Ledger hardware.
- Once connected, add accounts in Ledger Live App to manage coins and tokens.
5. Security Best Practices for Ledger Live App
- Never share your recovery phrase. Ledger support will never request your 24 words.
- Verify all transaction details on the device. Confirm addresses and amounts on the Ledger screen before approving.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live App updated. Updates include security fixes and feature improvements.
- Use a dedicated crypto device/computer if possible. Minimize browser extensions and untrusted software on machines you use with Ledger Live App.
- Back up and secure your recovery phrase offline. Consider using secure physical storage (safe, steel plate).
6. Common Troubleshooting for Ledger Live App
Device not detected
- Try a different USB cable or port; prefer original cables.
- Restart Ledger Live App and your computer.
- Ensure the device is unlocked with the PIN and that the correct app (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) is open on the device if required.
Firmware update failed
- Check your USB connection and try again.
- Do not interrupt the update; if it fails, follow Ledger’s recovery instructions carefully.
Ledger Live App performance or crashes
- Close other heavy applications, update your OS, and reinstall Ledger Live App using the latest installer from ledger.com.
- Export logs and contact Ledger support if required.
7. Advanced Usage & Integrations
The Ledger Live App supports staking, swapping and third-party integrations (like Ethereum dApps using WalletConnect). Use the integrations panel inside Ledger Live App or connect via trusted services that explicitly support Ledger hardware wallets.
- Use the Manager tab to install and uninstall cryptocurrency apps on your device via Ledger Live App.
- For DeFi interactions, prefer connecting through Ledger Live App’s recommended third-party providers to reduce attack surface.
